Mental Health Crisis in Kenya

Kenya is a nation deeply affected by trauma, as demonstrated by the intergenerational impact of traumatic experiences on its population. This trauma originates from a range of historical injustices, including atrocities during the colonial period, massacres, extrajudicial killings, sexual violence, and displacement associated with post-election violence.

Statistics:

  • 44% of adolescents in Kenya have a mental health problem according to National Council for Population and Development

  • 75% of Kenyans do not have access to mental health services

  • 1 in every 5 Kenyans will have mental illness in their life.

As a country, mental health is often neglected, especially given that the majority of the population is struggling to meet their basic needs. As such, millions of Kenyans grow up in highly abusive and toxic environments. A crucial aspect of this situation is the cyclical nature of trauma, where the experience of trauma can lead individuals to perpetuate further trauma. Research indicates that those who have suffered trauma are more likely to inflict trauma on others. Therefore, it is essential to disrupt this cycle to promote the restoration of mental health in Kenya.

Research indicates that approximately 50% of all mental health disorders manifest by the age of 14. Furthermore, it is projected that, by the age of 24, 75% of mental disorders will have become apparent. These statistics underscore the necessity for preventive measures and mental health promotion to target young children.

In this context, the roles of educators and parents are paramount. Early identification and intervention for mental health disorders have been shown to be more effective and economically advantageous compared to treatment initiated after the disorder has fully developed, which often leads to significant distress and social dysfunction.

Our programs are designed to tackle these issues through three interrelated programs. We adopt a holistic, comprehensive approach of mental health education and support for Kenyan youth as well as the people around them.
